Scoliosis Physiotherapy & ISST-Schroth

About scoliosis

Scoliosis is a three-dimensional structural curvature of the spine; lateral curvature, rotation of the spine around its own axis, and a change in sagittal balance occur together. This is what distinguishes it from the simple postural disorder it is often confused with.

The diagnosis and the degree of the curvature (the Cobb angle) are determined by a physician through radiological imaging. The type and location of the curvature and the person's age directly influence the frequency of follow-up and the appropriate approach. For this reason, regular follow-up is especially important in children and adolescents who are growing and of school age.

Process and practice

ISST-Schroth is a scoliosis-specific (PSSE — Physiotherapeutic Scoliosis Specific Exercises) exercise approach. It combines auto-correction, postural stabilisation and three-dimensional breathing work determined according to the curvature type and the Cobb angle.

The aim is to support the preservation of posture, the strengthening of muscular balance, and the carrying over of the awareness gained into daily life. The programme is designed entirely on a personalised basis and does not replace physician follow-up but complements it.
